What breeds do you think should be more popular? Which popular breeds do you think should be less popular?
Certain breeds have rightly deserved popularity because they’re good, all-purpose, easy-to-train, easy-to-care-for, good-for-the-general-populace, family dogs.
There are certain rarer breeds that might make better all-purpose family dogs than some of the popular breeds.
Do you think any popular breeds need to become less popular and less beloved by the average dog owner? Do you think some less common breeds should become better known as a good, all-purpose family dog.
Obviously health and behavioral problems become a problem in any breed that becomes popular. Nobody wants these problems thrust upon their favorite breed, so “too popular” because it’s developed or may develop health problems doesn’t count.
There are a number of great “all family” dogs who are almost unknown in the non-dog fancy population. I’ve found that to be very puzzling. Conversely, people go on “Fad” dog kicks all the time without really researching what they are getting themselves into: two that drive me crazy – so called “teacups” and “designer dogs.”
OK dogs people should know about:
Curly Coat Retriever
Portuguese Water Dog
Irish Water Spaniel
I selected these three because they are all coated medium and large breed dogs with sporting dog temperments (like the lab) but poodle like coats. So for those who are anti-standard poodle ( a shame since Standards are, in truth, fantastic family dogs who get a bad rap associated with the “poodle foo foo” ness that has been pushed onto the breed), these breeds I have mentioned have been existance, for years (and I’m talking in the range of 100 years – not 10!). There are dedicateed breeders out there devoted to these breeds and they are NOT puppymill breeds.
Also, in the list of dogs who should be better known are some of the truly family friendly spaniels. Want a great family dog – how about some of these?
Clumber Spaniel
Sussex
Brittney
Slow and steady, sweet, medium sized dogs with very stable temperments – why don’t we see more of them?
Then on the flip side:
Puggles – half the people buying them have no idea that they have become the principle product of Amish puppymillers or that the breed has a laundry list of associated temperment problems
Labradoodles – the Australian Guide Dog Society stopped breeding them because of skin and eye problems but that hasn’t stopped unscrupulous breeders from asking as much as $5,000 a puppy for this overpriced, overhyped mutt
“Teacup” dogs. Well, first off, there is no such thing as a “Teacup” dog. Most of the so-called teacups are members of the toy group. Unscrupulous breeders, and unsavey pet buyers, pine for “teacupss” because celebrities are seen sporting undersized toy dogs as small as 2 pounds. These dogs are prone to all sorts of physical handicaps – some of which can be life threatening. Ethical breeders will never sell a runt as a “teacup”!

Behavioral Ecology and Conservation Biology $338.75 In just the last few years, behavioral ecologists have begun to address issues in conservation biology. This volume is the first attempt to link these disciplines formally. Here leading researchers explore current topics in conservation biology and discuss how behavioral ecology can contribute to a greater understanding of conservation problems and conservation intervention programs. In each chapter, the authors identify a conservation issue, review the ways it has been addressed, review behavioral ecological data related to it, including their own, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the behavioral ecological approach, and put forward specific conservation recommendations. The chapters juxtapose different studies on a wide variety of taxonomic groups. A number of common themes emerge, including the ways in which animal mating systems affect population persistence, the roles of dispersal and inbreeding avoidance for topics such as reserve design and effective population size, the key role of humans in conservation issues, and the importance of baseline data for conservation monitoring and modeling attempts. Each chapter sheds new light on conservation problems, generates innovative avenues of interdisciplinary research, and shows how conservationminded behavioral ecologists can apply their expertise to some of the most important questions we face today. MATLAB for Behavioral Scientists $143.39 Behavioral scientists use computers in virtually all their workfrom data collection to analysis, presentation, and simulation. However, there has been no book written to date specifically for behavioral scientists on how to program with a generalpurpose programming language. MATLAB for Behavioral Scientists is a tremendously valuable textbook that walks behavioral scientists through the computer programming process, using terms that are relevant to their concerns and appreciating their special programming needs. Author David A. Rosenbaum, a cognitive psychologist with a Ph.D. in experimental psychology, introduces Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB), a powerful computer programming language with an active community of users engaged in many branches of science and engineering. Among its many attractive features, MATLAB offers highlevel commands for performing calculations with large as well as small data sets and for generating publicationquality graphics. Throughout the text, Rosenbaum presents each new principle with one or more illustrations of usable code. In addition, each chapter begins with suggestions regarding which actions to perform, followed by the commands required to do so. The book easily functions as a reference source so that readers can turn to a section of interest and quickly obtain the information desired. An accompanying Web site lists programs and code output, complete with color, motion, and sound. Communication Problems in the Family Business $29.09 Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Economics / Business: Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, printed singlesided, grade: A (1,3), Pfeiffer University, Charlotte Campus, course: Business Communication, language: English, abstract: For family businesses, effective communication is an even more integral factor for successful business operations due to the peculiarity that personal (family) emotions frequently interfere with business decisions. Family businesses often have to struggle with conflicts among members of the organization, low managerial abilities, interfered daily business activities, and customer relationships that suffer from the lack of structure and poor communication. The research provided in this paper shows that small family businesses face similar problems, whereas effective communication is the most frequently mentioned issue regarding the need for improvement in family businesses. This paper considers the importance of common expectations and values to guide family members, thereby eliminating areas for dispute. Other important findings are that leadership training and structured responsibilities (clear work roles) make the management more congruent and improve managerial communication; wellmanaged employees, who have direction and know about priorities, affect business activities positively; and that a professional appearance of the family business has a positive impact on customer relationships. The conclusion presented at the end of this document states that once the family business has successfully implemented an effective organizational and information communication scheme that includes emphasis on family values, then the business will be able to make use of the particular advantages a family business can have.
