To what extent is it possible to correct a dog whose bad temperament is down to its genetics?
For those of you who say that the temperament of a dog is usually down its genetics and not socialization/training…
To what extent is it possible to correct its undesirable behaviour?
Also, how do you know when the problem is the dog’s genetics?
I’m neither agreeing nor disagreeing with you. I honestly don’t know enough on the subject to say really.
I’d love answers by Greek, Curtis, Dutch and Memphis Belle if they’re interested.
I understand that you pretty much have to work with what you have when you have a dog with faulty genetics.
But how far can you go to correct the temperament and what can you not change at all?
I cannot explain PRECISELY what certain genetic behaviors are because they are things that I can look at and tell you.
Others such as fear aggression, environmental aggression, prey drive, defense, a million more, must be witnessed in order to be classified as genetic or otherwise, or, they need to be explained really well to make that assessment!
Genetic issues can be manipulated, they can be worked on, but, they can NEVER be changed, regardless of what Cyrus mentioned!!
You cannot change the fundamental behavior of a dog, you cannot replace it like batteries and put another one in there to suit your needs.
Face it, MOST dogs have temperament issues that are the result of breedings and even the best breedings CANNOT produce stellar results all the time.
You cannot and will not change fear aggression, you cannot and will not change prey drive or defense or fight drive that is genetically based, period. You can manage it, contain it if you will, but, never change it. People need to realize this FACT and accept it and then tailor their training around it. The ones that have a problem with this are the ones that claim their dogs wre abused, their dogs were beaten, etc. Hope I helped!
