can anybody give me some advice about taking my dog on a plane?

my husband and I are thinking about relocating from Spain to Australia. We have an Irish Setter and i refuse to leave her behind, i’m really worried about the flight. I really don’t like the idea of her on a plane in a box for all that time. Can somebody tell me how it works and what happens at stop overs etc, can she get out of the box at any time? what about going to the toilet etc. the whole idea scares the life out of me. Any information you could give me would be appreciated. thank you

I moved my Doberman from the US to Acapulco. I know exactly what your going thru !!!!!!!!!!!!! NO WAY was I NOT taking him. It actually turned out to be the best decision. To see his happy greeting everyday in a far away place for the two of us was a godsend !
O.K. Delta and Contenintal have great info that appplies to most airlines on thier websites.
You will need – all vaccinations current , Microchip ( in case something happens during travel the airlines have a scanner). A large crate he can easily turn around in, with beddding ( pillows) a detachable food and water dish. Extra food and water for the airlines to feed if needed. Attach to cage. Attach a packet to cage with all paperwork – you cell numbers , flight info and all Vet paperwork. Must label the cage with “live animal” stickers. I also wrote all my flight info and #’s on the top of the cage.You will need a health cert. 10 days from the flight day saying hes healthy for flight.
I was worried about him freking out during the flight and most vets tell you that they recommend NOT sedating dog and I did not. They want a good healthy “sober” dog should it need any kind of attention. Trust me they will be OK. Mine probably Freaked but soon settled in and slept. Trust me my Doberman is high strung
You will need to put on the cage his feeding and potty schedule so the handlers will know. Trust me the airlines employ pet lovers for this kinda travel and they know the importance of this to you.
Check the plane that will be used. I could only fit the cage on a 757. Only 757 went into Mexico City so I had to get a van and drive to Acapulco – no 757′s went to Acapulco and his cage w/n fit thru the cargo doors.
Also since he was so big they would only fly him cargo – well not all 757′s are ” cargo” flights so I had to check on that.
My girlfriend moved her 3 dogs to Australia from the US and she had a 6 month quarrantine – CHECK !
I might consider say going from Spain to somewhere halfway and staying a day and then continuing on. Most airports have an animal kennel on site for this. Some airline have a weather restriction and will not ship pets if the weather exceeds 90 degrees. Mainly for when the dog is out on the Tarmac to be loaded. Continental has air conditioned vans for this purpose.
Do not board the plane unless you see your dog loaded. DO NOT ! I actually stayed by the window at the terminal and watch the loading of him. He was last to go on and first to be off loaded.
This is a full time job trying to make the arrangements !!!
Find out from the airline before you depart where the dog can be picked up at. Plan on abou the same if not more than the cost of your seat on the plane for cost.
Check Deltas and Continentals web sites for the basics. Call Continentals people as I found the info was the same for all carriers and Continentals people were easier to reach and knowledgable.
Its a HARD < DIFFICULT thing to do but its your responsibility for the life of your dog. Trust me when you get settled in and look at his eyes and wagging tail – you will see it was worth it.
