What is a good protective dog to have for a family or child?

I was wanting to know if you know of any dog breeds that look mean and are protective of there family, but are actually very good family pets and good with children. I know the Doberman is one, but do you know of any others like them? NO PIT BULLS!!

German Shepherds are excellent protectors and great with kids. My family owed 2 when I was growing up and they were extremely loyal dogs and very good with 3 kids around.
Strangers were very afraid to drive up to the yard when they saw the two dogs. I remember they were named by my little sister who was 5 at the time…Prince and Princess.
German Shepherds are known as tough dogs, they can “look mean” (especially to strangers) and are very protective loyal companions.
I own a Dalmatian now and though he is a great watch dog, the breed is not the best with kids…some are exceptions, but very hyper and a bit aggressive in play.
