Are American Bulldogs, good dogs?

I am just curious to know from those of you who own one, are they good family companions? how is their temperment?, how are they around other dogs, generally? I know, of course, their behaviors have a lot to do with how they are raised/trained. So my questions are more directed toward their natural instincts/mentality/behavior.

You’ll never regret your decision to share your life with an American Bulldog. They are wonderful family dogs who love children and if properly socialized are good with other animals.

I fell so in love with my female, that once she got out of her puppy stage, I had to get another. They tend to be high energy and sometimes forget how large they are, but they are loving, playful, loyal, hardheaded babies.

You will want to find a breeder with both parents on sight, or at the least, accessible. I was always a believer that a dog is a product of the care it receives until I got my ABDs. Our breeder is fairly local and we have become good friends over the last couple of years. I was surprised at some of the traits my dogs have that mimic their parents, even though they haven’t been raised in the same manner or environment. I watch my Kyra’s father and in addition to the similarities in appearance, I am amazed at how similar their temperament and behavior is. They have my Glacier’s half-brother as well and sometimes I have to look twice.

I could talk about my ABDs all day. If you have specific questions, feel free to email me. I may have been a little unsure at first about having such a powerful breed, but now I don’t know that I would consider another.

PS-In response to Laurie’s answer, she obviously has the American Bulldog confused with another breed. They are a hardy dog with very few medical issues. You’ll want to look for a family history of hip dispacia, but other than that, they tend to be a very healthy dog.
